Job Description

Position Title: Drug and Alcohol Specialist
Department Affiliation: Pupil Personnel Services  
Reports To: Building Administration and Director of PPS
Grade Level Served: District
Salary Range: Minimum Salary $49,000 annually adjusted based on experience 

The Drug and Alcohol Specialist supports students affected by substance use concerns or related risk factors. The specialist also provides prevention education, screening, assessment, brief intervention, counseling, referrals, reentry support, and recovery support. The specialist helps reduce barriers to learning by working with families, school staff, administrators, nurses, counselors, and community providers. This work promotes student safety, wellness, early intervention, and access to appropriate school-based and community supports. Key responsibilities include identifying students who may be at risk, providing individual or group support, assisting with support or treatment-related planning within the school setting, contributing to MTSS and student support teams, supporting crisis response and reentry planning, offering family education and staff consultation, coordinating referrals and follow-up, facilitating prevention programming or targeted intervention groups, and maintaining required documentation.

 

 

Working Conditions 

• Work is primarily performed across schools with the primary focus on secondary schools. 

• Occasional evening hours may be required for family meetings or school events. 

Evaluation 

Performance in this position will be evaluated annually building administration with support from the Office of Instruction.

 

Job Qualifications

Education and Certification 

• Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field. 

• Valid State certification/licensure as a School Counselor (as required by New York State) or Monroe County Civil Service title of Drug and Alcohol Specialist – Schools.
• CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) Certification preferred.

Experience 

• Experience working with school aged students preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

• Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. 

• Knowledge of child and early adolescent development. 
• Ability to use risk assessments to assist with making recommendations concerning substance use and abuse.

• Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and families. 

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment. 

• Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
