Job Description

Summary

The Occupational Therapist provides specialized therapeutic services to students across the continuum of special education, primary students in special classes. The Occupational Therapist supports students’ ability to participate meaningfully in academic, social, and functional activities by addressing sensory, motor, perceptual, and self-care needs. This position requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and district priorities for inclusive, equitable, and student-centered instruction.

Primary Responsibilities

Service Delivery

  • Provide direct and consultative occupational therapy services to students with disabilities in accordance with IEP goals.
  • Address fine motor, gross motor, sensory processing, visual-perceptual, and functional life skills needs.
  • Support student participation in classroom routines, adaptive equipment use, and access to instructional materials.
  • Implement evidence-based interventions tailored to students with complex learning and physical needs.

Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Conduct formal and informal evaluations to determine eligibility and service needs.
  • Interpret evaluation results and develop measurable, functional IEP goals aligned to NYS standards and student needs.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data.
  • Complete all required documentation in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations.

Collaboration & Teaming

  • Collaborate with special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, psychologists, and support staff.
  • Participate actively in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings.
  • Provide consultation and training to staff on strategies to support student independence and access.
  • Support family engagement by communicating strategies for carryover at home.

Program Support (Multiple Disabilities Focus)

  • Assist in designing structured, accessible learning environments for students with significant cognitive and physical needs.
  • Recommend and support implementation of assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and positioning supports.
  • Contribute to behavioral and sensory regulation plans.
  • Support transition planning with a focus on functional life skills and independence.

Compliance & Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely service logs, progress reports, and evaluation documentation.
  • Ensure services are delivered in accordance with NYSED regulations and district procedures.
  • Adhere to student confidentiality and professional ethical standards.
  • Participate in professional learning aligned with district initiatives (e.g., SEL, trauma-informed practices, inclusive practices).

Job Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • New York State License as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Registration with the NYS Office of the Professions.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in a school setting.

Preferred

  • Experience with students with multiple disabilities or complex medical/physical needs.
  • Knowledge of sensory integration, assistive technology, and adaptive equipment.
  • Familiarity with NYS IEP development and CSE process.
