Teacher of English as a New Language (ENL)

Position Title: Teacher of English as a New Language (ENL)
Department: Instruction
Reports To: Building Principal and/or Director of Multilingual Learners
Bargaining Unit: East Irondequoit Teachers’ Association (EITA)
Location: Assigned School(s), East Irondequoit Central School District
Pay: In Accordance with EITA contract and experience.

 

Summary

The Teacher of English as a New Language (ENL) is responsible for providing high-quality, culturally responsive instruction to Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in accordance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) regulations and district expectations. The ENL teacher supports students’ English language development while promoting access to grade-level curriculum through collaboration, co-teaching, and targeted language instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Support

  • Provide direct ENL instruction aligned with NYS Next Generation Learning Standards and NYSED Part 154 requirements.
  • Deliver instruction using research-based strategies that support language acquisition across listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the linguistic, academic, and cultural needs of Multilingual Learners.
  • Support students in developing academic language proficiency across content areas.

Program Implementation & Compliance

  • Implement ENL service models (e.g., standalone, integrated co-teaching, push-in/pull-out) as required by student profiles and district programming.
  • Maintain accurate records related to identification, placement, progress monitoring, and exit criteria for ENL students.
  • Participate in required language proficiency assessments and assist with data analysis to inform instruction.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
  • Co-plan and co-teach with classroom teachers to ensure meaningful access to grade-level content.
  • Communicate effectively with families, including supporting language access as appropriate.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional learning related to multilingual education, culturally responsive practices, and district initiatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of NYSED regulations, instructional best practices, and assessment requirements for Multilingual Learners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or District Administration.
Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • New York State Teaching Certification in TESOL (K–12) or ENL
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition and culturally responsive instructional practices
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-based instructional environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, Bilingual Education, or a related field
  • Experience working with diverse student populations in a K–12 setting
  • Experience with co-teaching or integrated ENL service models
  • Familiarity with NYSED Part 154 requirements and ENL assessment tools
